New, longer PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2005) trailer
Several Alert Janeites wrote to tell us that there is a new, longer trailer for P&P3 at Working Title Films’ Web site. Unfortunately, the Editrix was covering for a vacationing co-worker (and Friday is her busiest day under normal circumstances) and was unable to post the information until now, and the Cub Reporters had some technical difficulties. Anyway, the link is posted, go watch!
Many thanks to Amy P., Sonja, Lindsey, Lynn and Paul from KeiraWeb.com for writing in! It’s lovely that you were all concerned that we didn’t know about the trailer. *hug* Now we are off to download it…review/squeeing/snarkage to follow.
ETA: First impression: Poor Bingley!
That Macfadyen fellow definitely knows how to smolder. Umm-hmm.
ETA II: Paul from KeiraWeb.com also sent us some more news about the U.K. premiere. The director of the Jane Austen Centre told Paul that the regional premiere of P&P3 will most likely happen as part of the Jane Austen Festival. The date has not been finalized but is likely to be the week of the 12th. Paul speculates that the world premiere will be in London on September 5 and the Festival will premiere the film on the 12th, followed by the general release on the 16th. Thanks for the info!
ETA III: It is obviously P&P movie news day! Our contact from Focus Features tells us that if you want to see the trailer on the big screen, before THE PERFECT MAN or CINDERELLA MAN is your best bet; also that there is a short behind-the-scenes piece running as part of “The Twenty” (pre-show entertainment) at select AMC and Regal theatres and on some lobby monitors at Regal theatres. (This info is for viewers in the U.S.)
ETA IV: Direct links to the trailer for downloading (Quicktime versions) have been posted in the comments of this post. Thanks to Mock Tudor!
P.S. And thanks to Teresa for the e-card! *snorfle*

Mags, I dont know about you, but I too am thanking, Amy P., Sonja, Lindsey, Lynn, and Paul as well for writing about this newest trailer. IT LOOKS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!! I mean truly spectacular. The Macfayden smolder is as engaging if not more than that of Firth-I know many P&P2 fans will be up in arms to hear me say that. But all I have to say is GO LOOK AT THE LAST SCENE IN THE TRAILER.
After watching this teaser I must now say i should not have because it makes waiting for September even more impossible. I wish that i could just fastforward the next few weeks, and months so that this film comes out sooner. And this glimpse further convinces me that this adaptation will be one all of us will be happy with.

My impressions? The difference in the social standing of the Bennets and Darcys are accentuated, Mr. Bennet seems more light-hearted, the whole Bennet family seems happier, I’m loving Mr. Collins, the camera loves Keira Knightley, and yes….
Macfadyen promises to be prideful, angst-filled, and smoldering. [insert gratuitous fangirl squeeing]
The $60,000 question, of course, is what are they going to cut to get the movie in at around two hours?
Oh, dear. I need a time machine or something. I just can’t wait for this film to arrive at this part of the world. *sniff*
I’ve never seen Keira Knightly so womanly and beautiful. LOVE the palpable chemistry between her and Macfadyen. As for Macfadyen, he’s that kind of actor who seems to have a quiet, potent magnet somewhere inside him…(am talking about Spooks in a fangirly mode)
Love the Bennet family. Elizabeth doesn’t seem so detached from her folks as in P&P2 and Jane is quite lovely. Do you think they have gone for Bingley a little stupid? I hope they don’t mess up with Poor Bingley too much, even if they need a comic relief…Especially when there’s always realiable Mr. Collins.
Oh, BTW, finally we get to hear Mr. Collins preaching sermons. OH,my. (go watch the trailer again)
Eck, I’ve fallen in love with Mr. Darcy….
Thank goodness for this trailer, as I now realize the other trailer took quite a few scenes out of context… when Darcy asks her to marry him, for instance, it looks as though they’re about to fall into each other’s arms and Lizzie’s going to say, “Take me now, Fitzy-witzy!”
But, rather, I suppose that scene in the other trailer was just before Elizabeth rejected him so… eloquently.
Dunno why so many people over at imdb are upset it’s comical- Austen originally wrote it to be a romantic comedy, didn’t she?
And yes, Mr. Darcy is smoldering as ever here…. Eep, I’m in love, screw Lizzie, I want him.
Eck, alrighty, going to go drool some more now…
Love from,
Lynn
Oh, just a question… is it at all possible for you to post a windows media version of the trailer on this site for us to download? Just that it’d be easier, and I’d be able to save it to my computer…
Just thought I’d ask.
- Lynn
The Jane Austen Festival in Bath actually runs from September 17-25 this year. If they want a Friday premiere for the movie it would be September 23 then.
Do you think they have gone for Bingley a little stupid?
Yes. It’s a sad state of affairs when Mr. Collins is more dignified than Bingley.
Lynn, I don’t really do the multi-media thing. If I see clips for downloadable versions, however, I’ll post them. I prefer them myself. (Though I like Quicktime better than .wmv.)
Beth, I said the same thing, but the publicity folks want to work with the Festival and the Festival wants to host the premiere, so dates have become flexible, apparently. I don’t know a lot of details, sorry.
The $60,000 question, of course, is what are they going to cut to get the movie in at around two hours?
Well, so far it looks like they’ve cut the Hursts, Sir William Lucas, and Maria Lucas. Probably a whole bunch of Meryton and militia people, too.
No idea why Bingley looks like such a foppish buffoon, but considering his sister, I suppose it would make sense. Foppish buffoon meets girl, becomes less buffoonish? Let’s hope.
Love everything, especially MM. Finally, a Darcy I’m not vaguely embarassed by, though of course I love CF. I kinda wish he’d crack a smile sometime, however, but maybe that’ll be our reward after sitting through the two-and-some hours.
Can’t wait for that dawn scene, as well as the closing scenes at Pemberley.
Oops, sorry. Above was me.

That’s actually what I loved about P&P1 – after watching hours of stifness, David Rintoul cracks a smile in the last scene, and it’s just so rewarding. I could see the same thing happening with this smoldering Darcy by McFayden.
Luv the sites, your on my Jane/Keira Knightley site!
J.
Looks absolutely fantastic! Even better than the first trailer.
I’m just curious whether Bingley really comes across as the buffon they’ve seem to have made out of him.
But, BOTH Darcy & Wickham look better and more believable than in P&P2.
Does anybody know where the music in the new trailer is from?
I checked the Jane Austen Centre website and Working Titles website again. They list the release of P&P as the 9/16 and the festival starts on 9/17. Sounds like some miscommunication has been going on. Hope they work something out!
Thanks for the reply Mags. I’m flying to the UK for the first time on 9/8 and planned to take the train to Bath on 9/15. I’ve already purchased tickets for the one of the Festival events and have been watching their website in anticipation of the final programme which hasn’t been published yet. Perhaps they’ll start the festival a wee bit early with the premiere instead of with the promenade on Saturday.
Either way, I’m really looking forward to seeing the film.
This trailer is the last thing towards making me love MM as Darcy totally! WOW!! I’m starting to think, too, that MM is gonna be better than CF. Talk about the smolder! Although I’ve never watched Spooks, I agree with the magnet thing, Jen.
I love it when Kitty and Lydia say “single!” simultaneously. It’s so funny! And I love Keira’s cute grin when she’s leaning against the back of the couch.
Good heavens, now that I think of it, it seems that the directors are really going for what Austen meant as subtext… the whole “I’ve been so blind”, and “You’ve bewitched me” never actually being said, but upon my rereading the book last night (eagerly hoping it would make September come quicker), it was mentioned in some form or other.
All in all, it seems to be a delightful change from the BBC version. Heavier, I would say, and an overall better cast. I never did agree to the Caroline Bingley they had in the BBC version- she was a little too severe and comical, really. In fact, almost all the characters in that version were just caricatures of what Austen had written, it seems. Even Firth, dare I say it, was a bit too broody for my tastes, at the beginning…
MM seems fitting for the role now. I dunno, he’s certainly got that understated charm about him that just… makes you fall in love with him.
And three cheers for P&P3, eh?
Hunsford Parson asked: Does anybody know where the music in the new trailer is from?
Some of the music in the trailer is from the 1994 version of Little Women. I have not yet identified the rest…
I’m loving the trailer, though! September can’t come soon enough!
> Some of the music in the trailer is from the 1994 version of

Well, that’s already more than I knew.
Thank you very much, Nichole!
Thanks for the reply Mags. I’m flying to the UK for the first time on 9/8 and planned to take the train to Bath on 9/15.
Have a great time–I’ll be following your footsteps in October (though I’ll be going from London to Portsmouth and then possibly by car to Lyme Regis and then Bath–otherwise train back to London and then to Bath).
I think what might happen is that they’ll premiere the movie on the 12th and call it part of the Festival, but then have the Festival proper on the announced dates. Make sense? You’re right, they can’t change the dates now, people have hotel reservations and plane tickets and such.
I can’t hear!…
What’s the line that Elizabeth says to Charlotte at the Netherfield Ball around the time that Darcy asks her to Dance?
“Most unfortunate”….”all modernity/eternity”? What? Speak up, woman!
“…which is most inconvenient since I have sworn to loathe him for all eternity.”
What I’d rather curious to know is what that line is when Lizzie is speaking to Charlotte, I presume, and Charlotte says, “We’re all blind”, or something to that effect… Dunno, it seemed a bit out of place, to me, since Lizzie hated Darcy at the Netherfield Ball, didn’t she?
Well, here’s to September.
Teresa, thank you. That line has been driving me bonkers.
Lynn: Do you mean the following?
Lizzie: “I have been a fool, but then so has he.”
Charlotte: “We are all fools in love”
September is far too far away for me…
Aye, that’s the one… Dunno, maybe they’re not talking about Darcy? Seems unlikely, though, doesn’t it… hmm, guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Speaking of lines, correct me if I’m wrong, but where exactly does Lizzy say in the book: “Nothing but the deepest love will persuade me into matrimony” (or similar) – because I think Andrew Davies has grounds for a lawsuit. *snort* I’ve searched for it in the book and in the e-texts and have come up empty.
Another thing I’ve noticed that they “stole” from P&P2. They took a close-up of Lizzy’s and Darcy’s hands when he hands her into the Gardiner’s carriage. Now I know for a fact that’s not in the book.
OK, now I have made my trouble for the day and will have done. I’m still very excited to see it, though!!
Teresa, I’ve been wondering the exact same thing about Elizabeth’s line. I’m in the middle rereading the book and thought I must have missed it somewhere so I ran a search on the e-texts, too. I could have sworn I remembered actually reading it. Glad to know I’m not the only one to do that.
And to address your other point about a “stolen” scene from P&P2: if you take a look at this photo – http://www.kkwavefront.org/media/albums/movies/pride_prejudice/C447-26R.jpg – it looks to be Mrs. Bennet sitting next to Lizzy in the carriage so perhaps this happens right after Elizabeth and Jane’s stay at Netherfield.
But you’re right, P&P3 does seem to be taking some of its cues from P&P2, which I have absolutely no problem with. Bring on McFadyen!
Yeah, that line surprised me, but then I was dealing with all the e-mails and a freaky computer and I forgot about it.
This is very interesting. Know what, though? I betcha AD wouldn’t care anyway. But how funny! Everybody writes their “fan fiction” to P&P2, don’t they?
Teresa – thank you for posting about the “line”. I, too, have been searching the book, the e-texts, etc., as it appears a lot of people have as well. I was hoping to find it in sub-text, or a variation, because even though P&P2 is good, I’d like to see what someone else does without ripping off.
Wow, MM looks great! I must remember to buy MI5 when in London. And KK is a very creditable Lizzy, which is more than I had hoped for. Now, has a poster been released yet???
This new trailer is much better than the other one in my opinion. It seems both more romantic and more dramatic, so I’m definitely looking forward to the movie. MM seems to have nailed Darcy..
Working Title has a picture of the poster on their website:
http://www.workingtitlefilms.com/trailers/menu_pride.htm
I’m afraid I immediately fell in love with MM after watching those trailers. And I’m glad we get a damp Mr. Darcy again.
I imagine the hand scene to be after Mr. Darcy surprises Lizzy and the Gardiners at Pemberly.
The line by Lizzy about “only the the deepest love…” is definite subtext. I believe it’s implied by her reaction to Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins.
Does anyone know about North American release dates and whether it will be a limited or a wide release? Please? Thank you,
No Canadian release date yet that I’m aware of. U.S. release date (in selected cities) is September 23. This will not be a blockbuster, BATMAN-type release.
And it certainly does seem that the International Order of Wet Hottie Worshipers (IOWHW) carried the day here.

Well, yes, but when they’ve obviously changed Jane Austen’s prose right and left, to come up with exactly the same dialogue to represent subtext as the writer of P&P2 is very interesting indeed.

It IS interesting. Perhaps it’s “based on the novel by Jane Austen and every other adaptation in existence” ?
Does the IOWHW have a membership list?
Or support meetings?

Wow, would you make sure to get my name on the list, please? I’m on the queue already.
From the Times online interview of MM : “As Darcy, in Joe Wright’s excellent new film version of Pride and Prejudice he’s terrific. He’s a man painfully ill- at-ease in his tightly buttoned frock coat — the more his love for Elizabeth Bennet overwhelms him, the looser and more dishevelled his clothing becomes. He strikes exactly the balance between socially inept reserve and chilly aloofness that the role requires. ”
Ditto to “Bring on Macfadyen.”
I just found this little piece of information:
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Keria Knightley and UK TV star Matthew Macfadyen of Spooks feature in Joe Wright’s faithful adaptation of the Jane Austen classic. Focus opens the Working Title production in the US on September 23, where an aggressive roll-out similar to Lost in Translation’s is planned. According to Focus’ distribution chief Jack Foley, Pride and Prejudice will open in 15-18 US cities and expand the following weekend. A Venice or Toronto berth will further raise the film’s profile.
I think I might have to go to the Toronto Film Festival.
Catherine, I am also contemplating going AWOL from university in Quebec to see it in Toronto. Nevermind the 10-hour bus ride! I want to see Mr Darcy!
“the more his love for Elizabeth Bennet overwhelms him, the looser and more dishevelled his clothing becomes.”
Interesting. The same thing happened in last year’s BBC adaptation of North and South. The more Mr Thorton grew desesperate about Margaret, the more he was prone to take off his cravat and his jacket in public and to let his stubble grow.
I’ve gotten the word that it will, in fact, be a limited release in North America – then open wider if it does well. I really want to go to the Toronto Film Festival. Apparently they will be announcing more movies in a press release next week. I will have to go AWOL from my government job
don’t think I mind much….
And for all those WMDW (Wet Mr. Darcy Worshippers) – I just made that up – this is apparently from the Sunday Telegraph:
Homage to Firth
The forthcoming Hollywood version of Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen, pays homage to Colin Firth’s iconic emergence from a pool in a wet shirt in the BBC’s 1995 adaptation of the Jane Austen novel.
Deborah Moggach, the affable novelist who has written the screenplay for the film, which is due to be released in September, tells Mandrake: “There’s a lot of rain in our version and, in a nod to Colin’s big scene, our Darcy – who is played by Matthew – writes a letter describing how he tore all his clothes off to go swimming, before the arrival of the game keeper ‘put a stop to such foolishness.’
Hello!
I watched the new trailer of P&P 2005, and I liked a lot the last song that appeared on it… I would like to know what song it is… if somebody helps me I’ll be very pleased!
Thanks.
So they really DID film fanfic then.
So they really DID film fanfic then.
Either that or read my mind….
I’m not sure if anyone’s posted this yet, but I know a few people were searching for it. The song at the end of the trailer (the American one, not the international) is “PM’s Love Theme” by Craig Armstrong, and can be found on the Love Actually soundtrack (though, I am personally convinced that it’s been used in a lot more trailers [and films] than just these two.) I hope that helps.
The trailer looks great.. although it makes me wish September would come a little sooner! Although I was filled with a bit or trepidation at first (could anything possibly surpass P&P2?!?!), this version is definetally looking promising.
By the way, does anyone know what the music played in the trailer is? It’s simply wonderful..
At first, i was horrified that the “big screen” would butcher P&P, but i must say that this trailer made me thnik otherwise. It seemed like Elizabeth and Darcy had a lot of chemistry, and Matthew Macfadyen had the trademark smoldering stare down to a tee. I’m counting down the days!
Hey, yeah, the music on the second trailer…I MUST know what that is. I knew that some of it was Little Women and Sense and Sensibility, but what’s that last part? It’s so nice.
Is it just me, or is the music on the trailer up on the movie website the music from the end of Love Actually, where CF proposes to the Portuguese girl and the little kid runs through Heathrow?
Alright, just found out it is from Love Actually, thanks to comment #44.. thanks Michelle
P&P3 will be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. There will be a Gala (sold out) as well as tickets for other screenings. However, Americans and Canadians wishing to see this are well advised that they should buy tickets now from TIFF, seeing as tickets are not guaranteed and are allotted by lottery.
Hi I have seen the trailer and am counting down to the release! Can anybody help me with the line Lizzie says to Jane under the sheets (right after it says “The Bennett girls are looking for husbands….wanted more” ? Thanks.
you all need to get a major life
Did they teach you that Christian deportment at church, Jane dear?
The High Priestess sees all, knows all. Do not mess with her.
Hi,
The music from the trailer is called “PM Love’s theme”. There are no lyrics and it has been used in Love actually too. I love it!
I tried googling “PM Love’s Theme” and I got nothing useful. does anyone have a link to where i could find it and listen to it over the net?
There is a song where a woman is singing to music… in the trailer. Does anyone know it?
Hey everyone,
I know you guys figured out what was the song at the end of the american trailer of pride and prejudice, but does anyone know the song title at the end of the international trailer???? Please someone help me,it’s been driving me crazy!
Thank you
Some are claiming the music at the end of the international trailer is music taken from King Arthur. It does sound rather Hans Zimmerish. That’s as close as we are to figuring out the music.
Does anyone know what song is at the end of one of the american trailers? I know it has a guy singing and I’ve heard it once before on the radio but I can’t find it anywhere online!
