My one problem with the 1995 P&P was Susannah Harker as Jane.. Jennifer Ehle's beauty definetally outshined hers. Rosamund Pike is a lovely and very talented actress (she was excellent in Wives and Daughters, which also stars MM's wife, Keeley Hawes) and I look foward to her portrayal of Jane. Only a little over 2 months for us Americans!

am i living under a rock, or why haven't i heard of rosamund pike? is she more of a british actress? when i first saw the 1995 BBC version, i was actually surprised and pleased with susannah harker as jane--if you compare her to the paintings and portraits ccmmon at that time, harker's beauty was very appropriate, with her large, wide set eyes, roman nose, and broad shoulders, etc. i think that this new film portrays more of our current standards of beauty...though i agree that jennifer ehle was definitely beautiful in the film :)

I couldn't agree more with what Kendra said. Jane is supposed to be this fabulous beauty, but in 1995's version, I thought that Jennifer Ehle was much prettier than Susannah Harker. Rosamund Pike is exactly how I've always pictured Jane to look. Jane Austen would be proud =)

I do have to say that I'm glad that, in this (2005) adaptation (vs. the 1995 BBC), they've made Jane more conventionally pretty than Lizzy. That's a key point in the book, and is a major factor as to why Darcy initially snubs Lizzy. And half of the charm is Darcy coming to realize that Lizzy is fabulous for her internal qualities, not her external (which are outshined by Jane's).

"Lavish" doesn't seem to go well with "gritty and realistic", but clearly he intends it to be a compliment. Does it mean this film takes the course of Persuasion rather than that of '95 P&P? Ahh, the agony. Is it september yet??

Rich Cline from the movie site Shadows on the Wall has written his review.
But he's not allowed to publish it yet, so all we get is the rating (four out of five), the running time (2h5m) and this one sentence:

Yes, it's yet another lavish adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, but at least these filmmakers make it properly cinematic, finely focussing the story while keeping it gritty and realistic.
