PRIDE AND PREJUDICE 2005 U.S. release date changed to November 18

July 27, 2005

Thanks to Alert Janeites Jessica and Cinthia, we learned that the P&P3 official movie site now lists the U.S. release date as November 18.

Yes, that’s the same release date as HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. Because naturally there would be no crossover in the audiences for the films.

*bangs head on desk repeatedly*

In other news, contactmusic.com reports that Keira Knightley lurrrrved working on the film.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY loved working on the new movie adaptation of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE because she felt like she found the sisters she always longed for.

The PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN beauty grew up with older brother CALEB in real life – so she was delighted to play ELIZABETH BENNET, who is one of five sisters in JANE AUSTEN’s tale of love and class in nineteenth century England.

The 20-year-old says, “It was fantastic fun being in a group of so-called sisters. We all had such a giggle it was surreal.”

And apparently there was a screening of the film in Hamburg, Germany, at which Ms. Knightley made an appearance.

P.S. Spelling mistake still on official site. V. obvious to Firefox user who proofreads for a living.

Screencap: PnP Web site error

Can you see it now? ;-)

P.P.S. Just changed the “post slug” on this post, which changes the URL, if anyone linked to this post anywhere. Sorry about that. It’s a Google thing.

    O, i’ll try it.

First: Matthew MacFadyen is really great. Keira ist great. I love Rosamunde Pike and Donald Sutherland. Tom Hollander is not the true Mr. Collins to me, but Kerstin (my JA friend) liked him, too.

There are some shortages and some romantic scenes, but it was O.K.

The ordiance was not an ordiance of Janeites, but they applaused during the movie and after it. I think it will be a great blockbuster. This movie hold perfect ballance between a serious literature adaption and a romantic Hollywood-movie.

I’m afraid the purist between us will not be satisfied, but I loved it like I love “Emma” with Gwynneth or S&S. And I think we dont have to answer the question: Do we prefer P&P2 or P&P3. This are two complete different movies for different medias: TV and cinema. Let’s enjoy both.

Keira was there, too. And she was really charming. She said she loves JA since she was 7.
    I hope that helps ;)

Here’s the other lucky one, who got the opportunity to go to Hamburg.
There’s one little thing, I want to tell you. Of course we’ve stayed until the last second of this movie and in the cast list, there she was… Samantha Bloom!
But, I can’t remember her part during the movie. There was something about “Rosing Governess”. She had definitely no line. Maybe she was cut out but her name was still in the cast list.
    It is a mystery….

So, here’s my humble opinion of this movie. I was really sceptical, because I am a big fan of the BBC Version. How can they cut the story to a movie of about 110 min?
But it works, the movie has a good balance between romantic, humour and the telling of the story. Keira is great, no doubt about it. But in her case I was quite sure, that she can handle her part.
But Matthew MacFayden… I owe him an apology! He’s a very good Darcy! Not like Colin Firth, but in his way of acting he is a fine Darcy, too.
I must say, that Bingley is not as goofy as it looks in the trailer. He’s some kind of shy, just a big boy, very fast deeply in love with dear Jane, who’s very sweet.
I really liked Tom Hollanders performance as Collins, he’s a little show-off.
So, I don’t want to bother you with a long sermon like Mr. Collins…. but if you want to know something… just ask, I really like to tell you everything! ;-)

My theory about why they changed it is that they want the movie to be in contention for the Academy Awards. Usually the movies that come out later in the year are the ones that get the most attention for the Oscars. However, I still can not forgive them for changing the long awaited release date on us Americans like that. Have the crys of “Is it September yet?” fallen on deaf ears? As Emma would say: Every feeling revolts!

@kerstin/sonja: you are really lucky!! did you win the tickets somewhere?
just one more question I’m a bit concerned about:
how do all these gloomy moor- and apperent-proposal-in-the-rain-scenes we’ve seen in the trailers fit in?

  18. July 27, 2005 6:14 pm

Kerstin–they did tell me, much later, that Samantha Bloom was in the movie, but in a very small role. Big difference from Charlotte Lucas, which was a rumor that was passed around as fact.

I don’t care that they delayed it, but putting it the same weekend as Harry Potter really stinks. That will already be a big “event” weekend for me, as I plan to see HP at least twice. No time for P&P. Of course, if they release it in September in the U.K., I’ll be there in October and can see it then.

  19. July 27, 2005 6:28 pm

Heh, I think it’s bizarre that they would push the release date back to the same day as HP/GoF. I saw a preview for P&P3 at Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and at least half the audience was headed over to the Book 6 release at B&N afterwards. If they’re basing their criteria for teaser placement on whether or not the film is based on a book, they guessed correctly, because I loved seeing the trailer there. Seems to me, if they can figure that out, they can figure out that they should not release those 2 movies the same night. *Joins Mags in a good head-banging*

  20. July 27, 2005 6:52 pm

Oh dear, I wrote the name of Matthew MacFadyen wrong again.. I really need to practise more! ;)
No, we didn’t win the tickets, it’s one of these odd stories, of which you never dream of!
Sonja and I are the webmistresses of http://www.janeausten.de.
For that we just asked UIP for the release dates of the new P&P movie. At first they’ve send us a nice mail with a short description of the story and a few pictures which we were allowed to put on our site.
Then a mail came, where they asked us if we have interest in a screening for the press in August or September. On Wednesday last week we got a new mail, this was the invitation to Hamburg for this special screening. Of course we were in a fever of excitement at once! We both don’t live near Hamburg, Sonja had to travel about 200 km and I 400 km, but this was no obstacle! :)
There were others in the cinema, who had never heard of Jane Austen ( oh dear!) and just won the cards.
One lady asked me, if this is a light novel, trivial! For heaven’s sake, I was a little bit shocked… But after this movie she might well buy one of the wonderful novels of our beloved Jane!

So, you want to know something about the proposals?
Well, they do fit. Of course, it’s a bit over the top, that it rains when Darcy makes his first proposal, but it doesn’t look so strange as in the trailer. Lizzy just ran out after she had heard the story of Darcy separating her sister from Bingley and she seems to be somewhere in the park of Rosings. And then Darcy turns up…
The second proposal takes place in the early morning. Lady Catherine emerged in the middle of the night confronting Lizzy. So poor Lizzy can’t find sleep that night and she takes a little walk. And what a coincidence, Darcy can’t sleep, too! And they meet in the dawn of day… very romantic!
But for the tender-hearted souls, there is no snogging. ;) And the only naked skin you will get a glimpse of is a naked shoulder of Lizzy and the small part of breast of Darcy.

  21. July 27, 2005 7:02 pm

Oh, well, Samantha Blooms appearence must be even shorter than her brother’s small scene in “Wilde”.
At least, I can remember him from that movie…

  22. July 27, 2005 7:29 pm

She is the “Rosings Governess,” so I guess Anne de Bourgh’s companion? She might have had lines that were later cut. I couldn’t imagine that character having much in the way of lines, but every actor has to start somewhere, and it’s not such a bad thing to have even a small role in a big-profile film like this one, so good for her.

Thanks for the review, Kerstin. Despite my complaining, I’m sure I am going to like the film, really.

As some have said (and privately I have been repeating this to Mags), I also believe they moved the release date to be considered for the Oscars. The Gala Premiere at the Toronto Film Festival reinforces that suspicion (the favourite high brow international film festival for Hollywood) and now I even have a third proof, the release date for my country (Mexico) is scheduled for February 3rd, 2006 and Mexican distributors release films that are profiled for Oscars precisely in February and March.

Also, like other around here, I think Focus Features is making a HUGE MISTAKE in releasing it on the same day that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a huge chunk of HP’s audiences is the possible P&P3 audience (not only us Janeites, but if they were also targeting KK’s teen fans, they will loose them against HP IMNSHO).

So the spelling mistake has been finally revealed. Thanks Mags. I must admit I rarely pay attention to the window title, the Production Notes also contain a repeating mistake. Only in the sinopsis Elizabeth’s pet name is correctly spelt as Lizzy (with an Y) as it is in the novel, but in the rest of the notes, it’s continually spelt as Lizzie (with IE) and that spelling doesn’t appear in the novel IIRC.

Last but not least, thanks to Sonja and Kirstin for their reviews (I used the Google translator as suggested), you have been quite encouraging, because my expectations about the film are low. In fact, I admit I am one of those who have talked very strongly against it.

Do people at Focus Features think that us the JA fans are the average audience and thus would be easily tricked? Why do not they say thinks plainly? They have to wake up to the reality and perhaps they need to be reminded about Miramax previous experience with us.

And what is 400 km of good road? :)

(Actually, as one living in the Western US, that is near, relatively speaking.)

Thanks so much for the review. Did you feel the movie was rushed? What did they cut out to get fit the movie into the allotted time, or did they just speed everything up.

Thanks for the screenshot of the spelling error. I didn’t look outside the box, so to speak, and thought I was losing my mind.

No, its not rushed. They cut some figures, the Hursts. Sir Lucas had not so much to say an Col. Fitzwilliam is not so important. It really works.

It’s more romantic than all the other adaption, thats true (and like Emma with GP). But I liked it very much.

Oh, I didn’t have to take the carriage… ;) I used this modern type of transport called railway!
And sorry girls, there’s no snogging! It’s just a kiss on the hand….
But although nobody kisses around, it’s very romantic!

There are a few shortenings in the story. The Netherfield visit is cut, but the part with walking around the room is in…
Lizzy meets Darcy at once in Rosings, they have to dine together. So there are the lines about more practising and Lady Catherine’s remarks about music.
You didn’t see Jane in London, only her depart and her return back home.

The time between the events is shorter, in the BBC serial they had time for all he talks between Lizzy and Jane and all the visits. But the basics of the book are in.
Wickham’s part is also very small. But as Sonja pointed out, they’ve chosen an actor who reminds you of Orlando Bloom, although he has blue eyes and blonde hair. ;) I was not so sure but well, she might be right! :)
Keira told us, that she was going back to the Caribbean now to meet Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. I guess, most of the female audience went green with envy! And maybe some parts of the male audience too! :)

What I really liked was the fact, that Charlotte comes to Lizzy after she is engaged to Collins and tells her, why she had done so.
If you never read the book and don’t know about the times it’s quite difficult to understand, why Charlotte wants to marry such a foolish guy. But in this movie she explains it quite clearly.
As well as Mrs Bennet ( as you can see in the trailer) is telling Lizzy why it is so important to accept the proposal of Mr. Collins.

We are trying to translate our reviews, but this will take a little time. If it’s ready, we’ll put it on our site!

  33. July 28, 2005 3:21 pm

@Tasha: Who knows. Our regional coordinator scored us tickets to an advance screening of B&P (not much advance–the night before it came out), but that was open to the public, she was just aggressive about getting enough for all of us. I will definitely keep my ear to the ground on that front. :)

  34. July 28, 2005 3:48 pm

I’m so sorry, but NO, there’s no lip-kissing.
I know this sounds quite disappointing but there’s no kissing end like the one in the carriage in the BBC series or the “pirate’s kiss” at the end of PoC.
I don’t want to spoiler so I can not tell you the end… of course, Lizzy doesn’t refuse Darcy! :)
The scene in the trailer, where Darcy and Lizzy are kissing each other is cut out! :(
But I can asure you, this movie is romantic enough for romantic souls. ;)

Kerstin and Sonja, I still have one question. Obviously from what Deborah Moggach has said in her own site and the Production Notes, it seems they have portrayed the Bennets as a great deal poorer that they really are, that also makes me wonder if that affects Lizzy’s argument that she is a gentleman’s daughter when she confronts Lady Catherine.

  38. July 30, 2005 4:22 pm

    /cinthia
    Oh, I can’t remember… I think, she didn’t mention it!
But yes, the Bennets seem to be a lot poorer than they are. Longbourne looks a little bit shabby and the girls’ dresses are sometimes a bit out of fashion. But they don’t die of hunger.

Imho the Bennets do have some money to life but not enough to be rich.

  39. July 30, 2005 4:27 pm

They are poorer than in P&P2, thats true. But who knows what it means when JA said Mr Bennet had 2000 pounds every year? They are 7 persones. How much had the Dashwoods with 4 people? Is this enough to give every daughter her own bedroom? I really don’t know. I think they wanted to show clear the importance of marrying rich. And I think the income made not the gentleman. I think Mr. Bennet was a gentleman by birth. And they want to show the difference between Bingley and Darcy and the Bennets.

I had no problem with that. May be this is more realistic than Longbourne in P&P2, I really don’t know.

And to say it clear, I think P&P3 is really great, and very worth, but I think I’ll ever prefer P&P2, only just a little bit.

I prefer Emma with Kate Beckinsale, but I love Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow, too. And so it will be with P&P2 and P&P3 to me.
