Melodrama, thy name is BECOMING JANE

Oh, boy.

CS: Is the Jane Austen movie you’re doing, “Becoming Jane,” more towards the drama side or is it also a comedy?
Hathaway: It’s a little bit of both. I think that the first half of it is like a surprisingly fun romantic comedy and then it veers into tragedy.

*buries head in hands*

I can’t give too much away. It’s not really a conscious decision to stick to one genre or move to another. I’m just learning how to act basically

*cries like a little girl*

And, pssst…this movie takes place about 15 years before the Regency. But thanks for playing!

::cries like an even littler one::

Her British accent is the least of our worries!

Isn’t there something we can do about this? Forget the public domain; copyright law is challenged everyday. By virtue of our collective wisdom, we can assert an exclusive claim on her work, and if push comes to shove, we can even enlist her collateral descendant, the Chancellor woman, in our crusade. Oh forget it—it’s over.

On an unrelated note, my favorite quote from the interview:

“I can definitely identify a Rothco [sic] from a Monet.”

Is that a serious statement? So can my CAT. Who is blind.

“Perhaps Margaret is right. Perhaps piracy IS our only option.”

(Yes, I know that’s not really Jane and it’s Edward LF Ferrars as interpreted by Hugh Floppy Bangs Grant, but it’s still a darned funny line.)

When all hope is lost in Austenland, the only thing to do is snark loud and proud! And AustenBlog shall lead the way! *cue stirring music*

    Exactly.

But, pray tell, what does LF mean?

Well, the L stands for Lame. The F stands for…another word. *whistles innocently*

    Does she mean;
“Basically, I’m just learning how to act.”
    or,
“I only ever aspire to act at a basic level.”
    ??

Dang! Wonder why Mel Brooks didn’t jump on this one? “Becoming Jane” would have made a great campy film — chorus lines of Jane-wannabees (including some Willoughbys in drag), vamping for attention of dashing yet feckless Lefroy. Closing shot is tragic figure of woman with parasol standing at rocky shore, staring into sunset and pondering life alone. Cue syrupy music, voiceover of first lines of Pride & Prejudice. Think “Blazing Side Saddles by the Sea”.

Robin, I’m guessing the former. There was probably a pause not indicated in the interview, so it should read–”I’m just learning to act, basically.”

Though neither sounds particularly promising. Haha, oh well.

Now, the Mel Brooks pitch on the other hand, that has potential.

I dunno, she has said that she’s worried about her reception by Janeites and whether we will consider her “good enough;” but then she says she is “just learning,” which does not exactly inspire confidence, does it?

  9. June 28, 2006 1:24 pm

No, no, no. She’s not learning to act, she’s learning to act basically. This is in contrast to her usual, sophisticated, high-falutin’ style. Acting basically means dropping haitches, tacking “innit” onto the end of sentences, and using glo”al stops rather than full-fat consonants whenever possible – like, whenevah.

This demotic approach is what will distinguish her Jane from our Jane, and allow it to appeal to the cinema-going masses, to whom the concept of “made up story!” has no resonance, after all, that’s what they get from the newspapers every day…

It could be worse. What if Kevin Costner declared himself a Friend of Jane and planned to make Northanger Abbey as a baseball movie…

Returning to the point….ohh! another Shakespeare in Love! No, no, no!!! A romantic comedy that finish in tragedy!!! No, don’t make me suffer in this way, and more, with our Jane Austen, although everything is fiction ;)

Perhaps it is tragic, in that Tom Lefroy is going to leave for Ireland and NEVER return. That is at the very least very
sad, at least for Jane Austen.

February is all too soon for the movie and I have heard imdb is a very unreliable source.
Last I heard they were planning to release it in March 2007 which seems more appropriate.
