NORTHANGER ABBEY to film in Ireland

June 29, 2006

Always-Alert Janeite Heather L posted in comments that the new television film adaptation of NORTHANGER ABBEY will go into pre-production this Monday. Jon Jones will direct; no cast confirmed yet.

We are all curiosity…and hope that Jane will watch over this production and that it will do justice to Henry and Catherine.

Oh my gosh! I can’ wait to see who is going to be in it. I hope that they do justice to the novel this time around.

Is it weird that I’m nervous about it?

No, that’s not weird, Mags! I’m nervous about it too! And excited! It’s so great they’re finally going to make a new adaptation of NA. This is the best news ever, it really made my day! :D

I’m a bit anxious about who they will cast, though…

I hope they made some changes to the script.

Me too, Mags. But I do not think that AD has changed his view on Da Man since 2002, when I last heard him speak of Henry, IMHO he doesn’t understand him.

And just for the fun of being cranky >:), may I add I do not like the idea of Ireland as a location, I had great hopes of seeing Bath again :( .

They better film at least SOME of it in Bath (The Happiest Place On Earth™) or I will be excessively put out!

When I saw the press release I thought, “What about Bath?” But it’s pre-production so maybe they’re doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work in Ireland, and maybe they’ll film the other scenes first.

They had better use a real abbey this time.

More castle-y type things in Ireland, I guess.

Lacock Abbey would be a great location, and it’s been used for the Harry Potter movies, so it’s not like no one has ever filmed there; and it’s near Bath.

That is sad, but perhaps they can create a pseudo-Bath. We only need to be concerned about the exterior shots. Interiors are usually shot on soundstages anyway, so they likely won’t be affected.

I am a bit nervous about this myself. Though I was not fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to hear/read ADs remarks on Henry, I always get nervous about film adaptations of classic literature. I do so adore NA! I hope they don’t mess it up.

I am OUTRAGED. If they are not going to use Bath the least they could have done is come to Edinburgh, which has already stood in for Oxford in Jude the Obscure, London in several Dickens adaptations and North and South, and Milltown in the last named. Then I could have seen the filming and maybe got in as an extra.

Blast! I was expecting them to use Bath too!

In fact I contacted my agency today, asking them to bear me in mind when casting the production.

Hope they don’t cast another Chav like Billie Piper for the lead role!

Have courage, goodly sir…there is hope yet for the new PERSUASION adaptation!

For some reason I just have a really good gut feeling about P3. Maybe it’s because I love P2 so very very much that I am just really looking forward to seeing another excellent adaptation of my favorite Austen novel. I have a good feeling about Andrew Davies’ S&S, too, actually, and I’m still positive about MP3. (MP3! HA! Not quite as unfortunate an acronym as the one for BECOMING JANE, but still good for a giggle.)

Unfortunately, having read the script, I honestly don’t care who they cast for NA at this point. Yes, even for Henry!

In fairness, as a native Dubliner myself, I think they could make a convincing imitation of Bath. Many buildings from the Georgian buildings have been fully restored and appear more or less intact. Of course it’s not “authentic”, but how many JA adaptations have been truly so?

Well, it’s one thing if they’re going for Generic Georgian Buildings, but so many places in Bath are instantly recognizable and in some scenes if you have been there you can pick out the location. Even watching NA1, I squee when I see the Pump Room (and giggle that they’re very carefully NOT showing the other side of the plaza) and in P2 when I see the Assembly Rooms, etc. And it’s really geeky inside-baseball fun when you realize that in NA1, everyone lives in the same house in the Royal Crescent! :D It’s also pretty obvious that the Elliots don’t live on Camden Place in P2. (I think they filmed on a house in Lansdowne Crescent or Lansdowne Buildings.) I live for those little glimpses of Bath because I love it so much.
