Persuasion 2007 at Clerkenwell Films site
November 24, 2006
Alert Janeite Cinthia just sent us a link to the new Persuasion 2007 page at Clerkenwell Films’ site. There is a synopsis of the plot and some new images of Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones. We are stunned to report that we have nothing to snark. Apparently it CAN be done!

Wow! Great pictures!!! I am so E-X-C-I-T-E-D!
That looks indeed GREAT!!! Is it 2007, yet?
Cool! Hope it’s as good as P&P 2005
It seems this really is going to be a great, accurate (filmed in Bath!) production!
Mmm, very nice indeed. However, is it my imagination, or does Sally Hawkins, in the pic with Rupert Penry-Jones, look amazingly like Polly Maberly as Kitty from P&P2?
I do see a resemblance, Michelle. It may be because of the small, tight curls at the hairline.
I do like the pics.
My copy of the book says that Anne was a pretty girl. We know that she “loses her bloom” after she breaks up with Wentworth, but we also know that she gets it back.
This girl looks like she a) never had any “bloom” and b) never will.
Sorry. But she’s not handsome enough to tempt me.
Since discovering that Mr Elliot (in this new Persuasion will be played by Tobias Menzies (who was scrumptiously angsty and looked absolutely divine in a toga in the recent ‘Rome’ series), I am at my most fangirlish in hoping for pics of Mr Elliot, all nicely cravated, will soon make an appearance. You WILL post any if you get them, oh great High Priestess? (hands over a chocolate like a good minion)
I’m afraid my first impression is the same as Julie’s. Perhaps (hopefully) she’ll look more attractive if there’s a bit more animation in her face.
And I’m not even being superficial. I just think that, if the book says that Anne should be pretty, then the actress playing her should be pretty.
After all, it’s not like we’re asking for the Honourable Miss Carteret to be a ravishing, sultry beauty.
I wasn’t too struck by her looks as well, but perhaps as said before when she’s acting, she’ll look better. I think it’s good that they haven’t chosen some young beauty. She looks like she belongs in Regency england. I venture to suggest that perhaps people back then had different opinions on what beauty was in a lady.
Her eyes are quite nice. ^_^
Possibly, but they’re not making a film for viewers in the Regency. They’re makng a film for the 21st century.
She is still a vast deal more “blooming” than Amanda Root, don’t you think?
No, I’m afraid I don’t think. Amanda Root looked positively radiant by the end of the film.
Well, we haven’t seen Sally Hawkins by the end of the film yet. She may be “blooming” by then also. We’ll just have to see.
I think pretty is in the eye of the beholder. I don’t get the people who say that the actors in P2 were not attractive enough. I don’t get the people who say that Anne Hathaway is too pretty to play Jane Austen (she doesn’t look like Jane Austen, but nobody seems to care except me–but too pretty? No.) I hope Anne has a “second bloom” in the movie. If not it will be doing the book a disservice. It depends a lot on how they light her, too…we’ll see.
I do care that Anne Hathaway does not look like Jane. It bothers me. Pretty or no, she is an inaccurate choice. From Anne Lefroy’s brother Eggerton Brydges’s description of her when they met in Ramgate in 1803: “I remember Jane Austen, the novelist…she was fair and handsome, slight and elegant, with cheeks a little too full. She was then about twenty-seven years old.” I think Samanatha Morton would be a perfect choice and she is a better actress. Though not of an age of the made up story, I suppose.
To enhance my point, compare this picture to the one of Cassandra’s sketch of Jane…

Not only that, she was born in Nottinghamshire UK and was in “The History of Tom Jones” mini! Need I say more!!!
But I digress…I agree with Julie P. that this Anne E. does not suit my taste, but am ready to have her change my mind. If Rupert likes her, so can I.
Is no one else deliciously excited about seeing Anthony Head play Sir Elliot? It makes me giggle to know that someone who once graced the stage in The Rocky Horror show will now be on-screen in Regency England…oh, the twists of fate…
I think Anthony Head will be a GREAT Sir Walter.
And I digress — I have an (admittedly irrational) loathing for all things Samantha Morton, so the thought of her in a movie almost guarantees that I won’t see it.
I think Amanda Root would have made a perfect Jane if she was younger. But the fact that Anne Hathaway is going to play her bothers me as well. Besides the fact that she might be too pretty, she is American and doesn’t look like how I imagine JA to have looked at all. There are so many good, talented, pretty-but-not-too-pretty British actresses, that I just can’t see why they chose an American girl for the job. Well, perhaps I CAN see why (the producers are only interested in money), but that doesn’t take away that I still don’t understand their choice.
Anyway, I haven’t seen Anne as Jane, so actually I can’t judge. But if I were the casting director, I would have chosen someone else.
The fact that she is American bothers me not at all, and I really don’t see why anyone else is bothered. Nobody cares when Australians or New Zealanders play Brits, and nobody cares when Australians and New Zealanders and Brits play Americans, so why should people care if an American plays an Englishwoman?
Are you saying that Cate Blanchett shouldn’t have played Elizabeth I? Cate is Australian, but Elizabeth I certainly wasn’t.
What about Emma Thompson as the fictionalized Hillary Clinton in Primary Colors? Or Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce in LA Confidential? Or Toni Collette in Sixth Sense? Or what about Jennifer Griffith in The Rookie or 6 Feet Under? Should we ban all of them from working in the US?
I don’t want to be rude or insulting, but as a proud American I am insulted at the thought that a talented actress who just happens to be a US citizen should be barred from playing a character simply because of her nationality.
/off soapbox
Sorry, I didn’t want to insult anyone! By saying ‘American’ I actually meant ‘from Hollywood’.
And you’re right: Americans are, of course, very well able to play Brits. I’m just wondering if Anne Hathaway is able to do the job… But again, I don’t think I should judge about that right now, because I didn’t see the movie yet.
I do not care about Anne, I hope she will be OK, like James McAvoy. The problem is the script….:(, nothing good sounds about it.
I didn’t think Sally Hawkins looked “blooming” enough either, especially in the first pictures we saw. But in the picture of her dressed in what I presume is her concert dress, I thought she looked sort of pretty. I don’t think Amanda Root looks very blooming in P2, though I’ve only seen pics and clips of that movie. And Sally H. will certainly pale in comparison to Rupert Penry-Jones, more than Amanda R. would have to Cirian Hinds!
I agree with you Carmen. Anne Hathaway has been in some fluffy movies, but she is not a bad actress. And I really am worried about the script.
Yes–with Becoming Jane (I hesitate to use the acronym) I am more worried about the script. I find Anne Hathaway an odd choice to play Jane Austen, though–not bad, just odd. Not whom one might think of. Not necessarily a bad thing, of course.
I think Sally is very pretty. She is not a beauty and Anne was attractive, pretty not a great beauty. She is also a great actress. I am very, very pleased with the casting overall. I believe this movie will be wonderful! Amanda Root was a great actress and I love the film but I think that she was not pretty enough, at least not as pretty as Sally by any means.
I also agree with Julie P. about non Brits playing British roles. What should concern you is whether or not the person can act, not where they are born and/or raised.
