Free Jane Austen audiobooks at LibriVox
March 24, 2007
Alert Janeite Lin wrote to tell us about LibriVox, a collaborative audiobook project where one may produce and/or download free audiobooks of out-of-copyright books such as Jane Austen’s. The Big Six are either complete or in process. Enjoy!

Interesting!
Grew up in the ’70′s me asks: do I have to have a zip something to download and/or open these?
Doesn’t look like it–just click through to the book you want to download and then download the individual files. I would pick the 128kbps mp3 if you have broadband; or ogg vorbis if your player can handle it. I think they’re supposed to be better quality than mp3s in less space, or something.
To download (for Windows), right-click, then click Save File As, browse for the directory where you want it to live on your computer, et voila.
I’m bookmarking this page. I wish I had something more witty to say, but as I just bought two Jane Austen audiobooks three weeks ago (Pride & Prejudice and Northanger Abbey), my wit, along with my wallet, is deflated.
I am vaguely amused in a self-deprecating way that the two books I bought are available for free. But then I think of my wallet and just get sad again.
*sniffles*
Eve, I have six or seven different audiobooks of NA, and several of Persuasion. Each one offers something different and interesting. Different readers interpret scenes differently. So don’t feel bad, and enjoy ALL your audiobooks!
