The most expensive ugly dress you'll ever own

May 29, 2007

Alert Janeite Franka reports that one of the dresses worn by Keira Knightley in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is for sale at the very spendy price of £3,995 (US$6,629).

A dress worn by Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) in the wonderful 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. This custom made, simple, empire line brown/maroon cotton dress has hidden buttons up the front and a paler coloured piece of ribbon detailing under the ‘bust’, also there is a green satin lining dress underneath. There is no size marked but it is labelled “Sands Films”. Keira has earned an Academy Awards nomination for Best Actress in a leading role for her inspiring performance in the film. She can be seen wearing this style of dress at the very beginning of the film as we seen her make her way home after enjoying some peaceful time away from the turbulent family. This dress also features on the cover of the DVD and for the promotional posters for the film’s release.

Proof positive that Keira Knightley could be beautiful dressed in a burlap sack. :-)

Well, that’s inflation for you! Back in the 1980s, a member of our JASNA-SW group, Harriet Williams, purchased a dozen beautiful costumes from the Elizabeth Garvie P & P, along with a few from a production of War and Peace. Members of the region bought the gowns from her, and we modeled them at a fashion show. I believe I paid $40 for mine!

Even if I did have a spare £4,000 or thereabouts lying around (and a very laid back husband), I think I speak for many of us when I say, there’s just no way I’d be able to cram myself into something KK sized! I’ll just stick to watching the adaptations for my costume fix!

Sorry, but it’s so expensive for a dress….and such an ugly dress…Also..who can wear a dress worn by Keira? You should be truly slim…even for that sack…

Anyway…if it would be the nice white dress for the ballroom ;)

Pity I’m too developed to even consider buying that ridiculous excuse for a costume. =P
It just goes to show you that anyone involved with that movie is just a little too big for their corsets/breeches…
I could MAKE at least 50 beautiful historically accurate gowns for the price of that ONE sack. >_

I agree with Sylvia L. Maybe the Janeites of the world should pool their resources and make a statement.

“Also..who can wear a dress worn by Keira?”

I think I can! :D It’s not the most beautiful dress I’ve ever seen, but if I was extremely rich I would certainly consider buying it. Not that I’d really wear it all the time, just try it on now and then, for fun! ;)

I think she means, “Who would fit into it?” (Because she’s very tiny)

Yes, I know that’s what she means, but I’m quite tiny too, so that’s why I said I can wear the dress! ;)

Yes…I meant that, but the dress is so horrible :P

I think we can make somehing better or try to burn the ugly dress.

If I cut myself in half vertically, I might be able to fit into that dress. :P
