The Bennets on Broadway
“Elizabeth, you’re going to go out there tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt Darcy…and come back a star!”
We have some exciting news: a musical production of Pride and Prejudice will be on Broadway next year! We have blogged in the past about the musical, which had a premiere at the Ohio Light Opera Company last summer and, after some rewriting to transform it from an operetta to a musical theatre piece, some developmental readings in New York earlier this year. More readings are planned for August; stay tuned for further details. The producers hope to open on Broadway in August 2008.

First of all… HI Mags!!!! Haven’t participated in convo in while so just wanted to say congratulations on your fabulous new book! Anyway, this is absolutely great news about P&P being on Broadway. What falicitations!!!!! I’ve always wondered why nothing based on JA’s work made it there before. Please keep us posted about it.
I’m thinking another trip to NYC is in order! Looking forward to getting more details.
Actually, there has been P&P on B’way before, but a very long time ago…the Helen Jerome play back in the 30s and the “First Impressions” musical (which I understand is pretty bad) in the 50s or 60s, I think.
Check out the Alberta Burke notebooks at Goucher College for lots about both productions. Not sure which notebooks exactly have stuff on which productions–the first two or three will have the Helen Jerome play info, including (somewhere) a James Thurber drawing of Lady Catherine and Mr. Collins, which nearly made me weep with joy. (I adore Thurber.)
Road trip!!
Hmmm, normally I like musicals, but a P&P musical… Lizzy and Darcy singing songs? I don’t know. It might be very silly and somehow I’ve got the feeling that it’s going too far. I really don’t know why I feel it that way. Am I the only one?
Mags, the quote cracked me up. Very funny.
Franka, I had the same misgivings when I heard “Jane Eyre” was being made into a musical for Broadway, but that show remains one of the best productions I have ever seen. And I’ve seen quite a few.
So here’s hoping.
