The Jane Austen Book Club official web site is operational

July 10, 2007

The Jane Austen Book Club film’s official site seems to be operational, complete with trailer, synopsis (which is rather non-painful) cast info, a gallery, and it looks like there will eventually be sweepstakes! w00t! Go forth and drool, Dancy fangirls and Blunt fanboys.

Could it be? Could the evil, nasty, tar-hearted, dried-up, humorless, snobbish, polar-opposite-of-kind-and-sweet-Jane, unable to be pleased Editrix be feeling…optimistic about a film adaptation?

(We are not afraid of being overpowered by the impression. It will pass away soon enough. ;-) )

I’m just not even very interested in this one–I didn’t like the book (perhaps I’m alone in that opinion), and although it is technically a film adaptation of a novel, I’m not worried since it’s not an adaptation of an AUSTEN novel. From the beginning of the book (and I expect the film to be similar), I felt very little Austen “presence.” I felt the use of Austen as the focus of the reading group was more a “cashing in” on her popularity.

My opinion is unpopular, I think. (I’ll still see the movie, though, of course!)

I think the movie looks great–the book was a fun read, and I like the premise actually–Austen is everywhere and this book/movie is a snapshot of that phenomena.

I didn’t care for the book either so you’re not alone there, MarJean, but the trailer does make me think I might like the movie more.

I think the movie appeals to me more than the book. I found the narrative style of the novel pretentious and difficult to get into because of this, but the ‘we’ narrated by the anonymous (or everywoman) narrator is unlikely to be some sort of film voice over so it’ll probably irritate me less. Also, I think they’ve chosen a pretty great cast – especially Amy Brennerman and Emily Blunt.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that didn’t care for the book. Not interested in the movie either (gasp).
