Sneak peek at "The Complete Jane Austen" on Masterpiece Theatre
Alert Janeite Marybeth let us know that Masterpiece Theatre has a sneak peek of some of the Jane Austen adaptations it will be broadcasting in 2008. (The link is on the right side.)
The sneak peek includes longish bits of MP, NA, and Persuasion, all new to American audiences, presumably.
The OC Register also has an article about various past film adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels, including a handy (and amusing) chart. Of MP99:
Jonny Lee Miller as Edmund gets too little screen time, and Alessandro Nivola as Henry Crawford is ruined by goofy sideburns
Hee!

I wonder why Northanger Abbey is being advertised with a photo of the actress playing Isabella Thorpe and not Catherine Morland? Possibly something to do with the fact that audiences may recognise Ms Mulligan from P&P ’05, but probably have never heard of The Archers?
Exactly my question Helen! Or perhaps they remember her from Bleak House??
My other question for Masterpiece Theatre is what was that trailer all about? Jane Tennison and Jane Eyre, tenuous much? Also, why show trailers just from MP (shudder), NA and Persuasion and not the others (with exception to the new Sense and Sensibility of course).
Our similar posts are entirely coincidental. I agree with Helen and Alison – what was this trailer all about? Very confusing at the start, and I had hoped to see clips of Emma and P&P as well, but they were excluded.
Like I said in the post, they probably figure their audience has had the opportunity to see Emma and P&P (since they’ve been previously broadcast and out on DVD for a while) but these are “new” so they’ll use them as a tease.
I hope the new adaptions of NA and MP are decent. I haven’t heard the most promising reviews of MP.
I agree with everybody, but I think the trailer should be more complete, although they don’t have Miss Austen Regrets or S&S3 clips…I got a bit tired of Billie Fanny
At the risk of spoiling it for you Therese, don’t get too excited about MP, and you won’t be disappointed…Northanger Abbey however, is fabulous and it was never my favourite story to begin with!
Just a quick heads’ up: Persuasion is screening in NEW ZEALAND on TV1, Sunday August 12 at 8.30pm.
I am loathe to say it, but I hardly recogized NA2.
I mean, Catherine reading the Monk ? Spare me all those fantaises not in JA’s book ! Hardly any JA dialogue and (sob !) no scenes of Bath.
