I thought this was a really good review. Sometimes I wonder… if there was a biopic about Nabokov and some conjured-up “real Lolita” who influenced his work, whether the Nabokov fans in the ivory tower would let such an affront take place. Or whether it’s just accepted that because he was a man, he was able to come up with his brilliant ideas all on his own.

It’s interesting that now, several months after having seen the film (I’m in Australia), I can remember very little about it, other than the following.

1. The costumes were a miss-match of eras and styles

2. Jane appeared to not be a terribly clever writer, and picked up most of her best lines from the people around her.

3. She was awfully good at cricket.

Shame I spent my Honours year studying Austen. Based on this film, it seems I was completely misreading all of the material I poured over that year.

Henry just got back from the Crimea! Ha! Yes, that’s exactly it. Those whiskers bothered me, but I didn’t express it that well. I was mostly bothered by Jane’s Jane Eyre makeover.
