Did we mention she's everywhere?

Alert Janeite Julie T. spotted this intersection in the south side of her hometown of Milwaukee:

Bennett and Wentworth Streets

We’ve had an insanely busy couple of weeks (so if you e-mailed us and we didn’t respond or post it, we’re not ignoring you, really) but hope to get caught up tonight or over the weekend. In the meantime, have an open thread. What’s new in Janeiteland?

This is great :-) I live in between two streets called Darcy Road and Wentworth Avenue.

My college roommate lived on Wickham Street.

Personally, I would love to live on Wentworth Ave.

In answer to “What’s new in Janeiteland?”, I came across an interesting article in the Winter 2008 edition of MS Magazine entitled “Jane Austen Lives” It discusses her current appeal and the meaning behind the story presented in the novel, which is not always apparent in the recent adaptations (as we have noticed!) They mentioned something I never realized concerning Darcy’s comment about Elizabeth’s “fine eyes.” That is that he was responding to her intelligence, taste and discernement as he got to know her better. I would love to know what others think about the article.

I read that same Ms article! It made me fabulously happy to find it.

Back in the mid-to-late 90s, The Women’s Quarterly devoted an entire issue to Austen and her return to popularity. It’s not online, but I’ll see if I can find it in my collection.

And I would definitely love to live on Wentworth Avenue/Street/Place/Road/Boulevard

I love that Julie’s intersection even manages to be not just any old Bennet but specifically “E. Bennet”. Wonderful!

Since I’ve taken to reading Austenblog during my lunch hour at work, I now have a collection of coworkers who actually come by to ask what’s on the blog. It would appear that closet Janeites are everywhere, as well!

We’re getting ready to move. Our new house will be two houses down from a street called Wickham. I can see the sign from my front door. We also looked at a home on Jane Austen Court in the same town. It was too small a home. I would have gotten a kick of living on Jane Austen Court!!

I want to stand on this street corner and have my picture taken. Though I’d probably lean towards the Wentworth side. :)

Have these streets been named so, recently?
Sort of a *Jane Austen* pop culture thing or were these streets always called by these names? If so then I am amazed that they weren’t noticed before this. :-)

Kitty Bennett contributed to an article in the New York Times today. It’s one t too many, but it’s nice to know she’s gotten out from under Lydia’s influence.

Jane Austen Court is with a whole group of streets with famous authors. Some of the other streets are Hemmingway Street, Mark Twain Court and Lewis Carroll Court. Brett Ashley Place and Jake Barnes Court intersect with Hemmingway Street. Quite a literate developer there.

Wickham street is fairly new and I would doubt has anything to do with Austen. When I started looking at homes in the area I was amused that there were homes on Wickham Street. Wasn’t too sure I wanted to live there!!

I just finished reading Mr. Knightley’s Diary by Amanda Grange. A most enjoyable read! I’m going to try to my hands on more of her books. :)

Diana I-C and Julie P.,thanks for the response! I am looking forward to finding out more about the Austen issue of Womans Quarterly.

Also, It is great to find out which of the Austen sequels and spin offs are worth reading. I picked up “These Three Remain” which is intended to describe Mr. Darcy’s experience in P&P. I couldn’t finish it because it seemed like a romance novel where the hero, Mr. Darcy, strides around in a constantly irritated mood.

During our first week in England in August 2006, I clipped a side-by-side pair of death notices out of the Coventry newspaper. They were for Nellie BENNETT and Shirley D’ARCY.

I always jump when I read the notice board at my music college. I keep seeing the name Elizabeth Bennet there, and I’m dying to meet her!
