Trophies
The Christian Science Monitor’s Chapter and Verse blog ponders on the value of trophies to different fan cohorts.
I must admit that I rolled my eyes a bit while listening to the local news this morning. Two newscasters were discussing an upcoming sports auction and debating: Would they rather own a historic Red Sox trophy or a shirt connected to the Celtics?
Then I got to work and saw this little item in the Guardian: a first edition of Jane Austen’s “Emma” was just purchased at auction for a record 180,000 pounds.
We especially liked the comment left by Herb Yood.

Good comment by Herb but not exactly fair. Bronte’s descriptions of Jane Eyre’s early life really stay with you. Yes, later on that annoying Mr. Rochester hits the scene and Jane goes all romance novel heroine on us, but give the book its due – Marianne (one of my least favorite characters, can you tell?) would have given us serious pulp.
What, no one’s going to zing Herb for attributing Wuthering Heights to Charlotte, and not Emily, Bronte? Well, I’ll do the pedantic honors. . .
Oh, dear, I didn’t even notice. ha ha ha.
