Stephen and Jane

November 14, 2008
by Mags

We received several squeeing e-mails from the Janeite wing of Colbert Nation, telling us that Stephen Colbert had done a hilariously funny segment in which he mentioned Jane Austen. We can’t watch it till later today, so we’ve posted it below for everyone else to enjoy while we sit in the corner and sulk.

Thanks to Alert Janeites DeeDee, Kelly, and Julie for the info and link!

If anyone’s wondering, the Jane bit starts at 1:45, and it’s about the baseball reference in NA. ;D

I know! I was among the laughing and loudly squeeing JA fans watching that night. It was two of my favorite things meshed into one glorious whole–Austen and Colbert.

Give him an award for something Austen-related, Mags, that always gets his attention. Then maybe he’ll stop in to chat for awhile.

I saw this last night and loved it! Jane Austen AND Stephen Colbert? Now that’s just plain AWESOME.

I second Sue’s comment! Any time someone gives him an award, he makes a big deal about it on the show. ;D

And ditto to Rebecca and Candace. As someone with “Jane Austen is my goddess, and Stephen Colbert my patron saint” in her Facebook profile, you can imagine my hyperventilating last night. *grins*

SC has a team of talented writers, julie, some of whom perform at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in NY on a regular basis. Plus – that ‘black guy’? I totally know him! He’s from the UCBT too.

    “Pine.” Pure genius.

This was wonderful–I don’t know how many people I sent to Austenblog today to watch SC wag his finger. Simply wonderful. I second the award idea.

Canadian viewers can watch the Nov. 13 episode at Comedy Network’s website at thecomedynetwork.ca. (I couldn’t get the video in the post to work for me.)

Stephen Colbert rocks: this is a truthiness that must, that shall, be universally acknowledged!! We’ve got to give him some kind of award!

Well I think the handsome, witty and charming Mr. Colbert should be presented with the Henry Tilney Award granting him status as an honorary Janeite. I think this is the cleverest bit of fun we’ve had with Jane in a long time!

Cynthia, that was fantastic. “It is a truthiness, universally acknowledged…” needs to be on a t-shirt somewhere. That must be one of the best lines I’ve heard all year.

I agree that we must give Stephen Colbert an award for this. I also second the suggestion that “It is a truthiness universally acknowledged” be turned into a t-shirt. If I had the time I would create it at Cafepress right now. :-) Brilliant.

An award involving some kind of a reverse cluebat?

  21. November 17, 2008 8:40 pm

    TFF!

I was a bit put off by how he pronounced it “North-Anger” but I guess it is in keeping with his character.

This just gets better and better every time i’ve watched it.

I record Colbert and just watched this episode today. What an incredible surprise to see such a funny reference to Jane Austin. Not only is Stephen Colbert from my home state of South Carolina, but also to learn he knows enough of JA to make a great joke! No wonder I’m one of his biggest fans!
