Jane Austen Ate My Brain

Alert Janeite Laurel Ann let us know about a short excerpt from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, coming in April from Quirk Books.

We actually know a little bit (a very little bit) about this book, as Quirk Books also published The Jane Austen Handbook: A Sensible Yet Elegant Guide to Her World, the Editrix’s own publication, and we heard a little about it from the marketing folks at Quirk. The thing with Quirk, it’s not just about the book, it’s about the package, and their humor is very straight-faced (sort of like Henry Tilney). One of the big in-jokes is that the book is being presented as though it is a scholarly edition (as can be seen on this large cover image on Jane Austen Today: “Quirk Classics”). We also were shown an excerpt, and it is basically the text of P&P with zombie stuff added. It’s not really a rewrite. We’re not entirely sure the joke will hold up throughout the whole novel, and we actually prefer ninjas with our classics, but we’ll see in April!

Even though there will be no ninjas, I’m actually incredibly excited about this. *takes quick glance at Zombie calendar hanging on the wall* I mean, Jane Austen and the undead? I’m thinking “Shaun of the Dead” meets Masterpiece Classics. Heck yeah!

There’s still for someone to write Sense and Sensibility and Ninjas

Time. There’s still time is what I mean to say.
