Welcome to Getting Local With Jane, our weekly listing of local events that might be of interest to Janeites. If your town isn’t listed, keep checking–one week you might get lucky! The current listing is heavy on stage productions of Jane Austen’s novels.

February 13-22, 2009, Smyrna, Tennessee: Lamplighter’s Theatre Company presents a new stage adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Tickets are $8-10, with group discounts, and are available online or by calling the box office. The Murfreesboro Post has an article about the production.

February-March 2009, Locations throughout the UK: Heartbreak Productions is touring the UK with a stage production of Emma throughout February and March. The Warwick Courier has an article about the production.

March 11-14, 2009, Chesham, Buckinghamshire: Panda Players present Bernard J. Taylor’s musical adaptation of Pride and Prejudice at the Elgiva Theatre. Tickets are £10-12 and are available online.

As the spring season gears up, if you’re a JASNA member, check with your region to see if they have any local events scheduled.

JASNA’s Metro Kansas City Region announces their spring 2009 schedule of events:

February 15: Terry Peck and Lindy Baker will co-host; bring your favorite romantic quote from Austen.

March 1, 2 p.m.: We’ll attend a production of Susanna Centlivre’s “The Busy Body” at Rockhurst University’s Mabee Theater. Tickets are $8; coffee afterwards, location TBA. The Austen family performed another play by the same author at Steventon, with cousin Eliza de Feuillide in the lead; picture Jane taking notes on flirting among the actors and actresses! For more on the author see the article at Wikipedia.

April 26, 1 p.m.: Gaye Stevick will host a viewing of the 1980 Pride and Prejudice, with Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul as Elizabeth and Darcy. Later versions with Keira Knightley or Colin Firth may be better known, but this production has great charm.

I have just watched the Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul Pride and Prejudice for the…I’ve lost count over the years. Despite the unevenness of the production and a little amateurishness occasionally, this is far and away my preferred version. Both Garvie and Rintoul are closer to the book characters than those in the other versions. Elizabeth Garvie, in particular, is splendid as Elizabeth Bennet, avoiding the inconsistencies of character and moral outlook that the modern Jennifer Ehle character lapsed into. She makes it perfectly comprehensible that a tough nut like Darcy succumbed… My question to anyone who wishes to respond is: what is Elizabeth Garvie doing these days? Are there recent photos of her, and does she ever appear at the occasions organised by the various Jane Austen groups?
