Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Here’s a fun site that Alert Janeite Marsha brought to our attention: a costume site that points out reused costumes, including costumes used in more than one Jane Austen film! We spotted a few of these ourselves in the past, and it’s a lot of fun to see a gown you’ve seen before!

Fabulous. Love that site anyway, but to see how these costumes are reused is fun.

It’s so interesting to see the dresses being reused, especially in productions made by rival companies! Well spotted! :-)

Great link to all those photos. Some folks have sharper eyes than I do, though even I screamed at the TV screen when I spotted this while recently watching “Mansford Park” (sic):

“James D’arcy as ITV’s Tom Bertram in Mansford Park wore that glorious suit that Sir Walter Elliot established in BBCs 1995 Persuasion. “
That suit looks like a carpet to me and is SO distinctive I can’t believe they reused it.

Yeah, but Deb, look at the context of how they used it: Tom Bertram camping it up in Lovers’ Vows! It’s perfect!!! (And those screencaps look awfully familiar… ;-) )

Every time I see sir Walter’s suit, I am reminded of the scene in Gone With the Wind when Scarlett tears down the velvet curtains and turns them into a dress. In Sir Waler’s case, it looks like he raided the windows in Versailles :)

One of the costumes in Becoming Jane was from Marie Antoinette.

Thanks for the shout out for my website! There are literally a *ton* of reused Austen costumes. I haven’t even put a dent in them, but there’s only so much time! I post some here and then when I am able! :-)

It’s not an Austen one, but Lady Dedlock in Bleak House wears the striped number that Margaret is wearing at the end of North and South…

Great website, I couldn’t believe how many costumes were reused!

Speaking of recycling, there’s going to be a Hollywood movie remake of Lost in Austen.

Do you read french? I speak of Jane Austen on my new blog, especially of Pride and Prejudice. You can read it here:

I’ve just discovered this website, congratulations, I enjoyed my visit and I will come back!

What fun! One more reason to rewatch a few Austen productions.

Not Austen-related, by the other week, I spotted the overly-decorated gown Catherine wears to her cousin’s engagement party in The Heiress on a rerun of Bonanza on TVLand, worn by gambling-addicted Julie Adams. (The gown turns out to be blue, not cherry red.)

Welcome, Elzevier! Your English is better than my French. Your blog looks interesting and I will spend some time testing my memories of school lessons to see how much I can translate.
