Netherfield Park is let at last in the pages of a comic!
February 26, 2009
Alert Janeite Héctor let us know that Marvel has posted a five-page sneak peek of the Pride and Prejudice comic book. The Bennet sisters are handsome indeed–they look like supermodels! Even Mary!

Yeah, looks like the cover of ‘Tatler’ mag !
It looks like its not really a comic made from P&P the book, but from P&P05 the film. Not only the does the people look like the actors in that film, but some of the scenes looks the same. Like page 4 where mrs. Bennet wants her girls to come hug her (dancing with Kitty and Lydia in the film) or the next where all the girls look out of the window. It also looks like they decided to skip mr. and mrs Hurst just as P&P05 did.
Lordy, that is one unattractive Mrs. Bennet…..
Hmmm, it looks like the illustrator is drawing heavily (sorry) from the Keira Knightley adaptation, especially with Jane and Mr. Bingley.
Appears to me the artist used Kathy Bates as model for Mrs. B.
I thought the exact same thing about Kathy Bates. She would probably make a really great Mrs. Bennet!
Umphh! Too ‘supermodels’ for me…and after seen ‘The three musketeers’ by Petreus, I expected something more classic…It seems to be very ‘cosmopolitan’ and the design even reminds me certain online comics by NBC’s Heroes…well, we will have to see more pages…
My goodness! The Bennet girls all look like vixens!!
*Black lips*!! Why?????
What an attractive way to introduce another generation (or maybe sub-culture?) to “Pride and Prejudice”!
I liked it!
I agree with Sarah, it definitely looks like the illustrator got their inspiration from the 05 version of P&P. Even the clothes look similar to the ones in the film – not quite Regency!!
Darcy sure is dreamy.
…Darcy sure looks like Matthew McFayden- rather than Darcy.
I wish Artghost would finish her on-line P&P comic. Despite mistakes, it uses JA’s dialogue and doesn’t go for a glossy, cosmo. look. When was Lizzy such a pose ?
P&P 1940 also had no Hursts. See P&P Utah and P&P Wishbone as well. (Oh, and P&P Madison, but you might not live in New Jersey.) But it does crack me up that they killed them off here just as in any new production.
Darcy, to me, looks like a mashup between the LiA Darcy and Colin Donnell!
That was really fun; just as entertaining to check out as any new adaptation. Ooh, what’s this going to look like? How will that person be? What an unfortunate Mrs. Bennet. Ooh, very cute Bingley! Oy, what is up with the girls’ hair all loose like that? Are we supposed to make a certain inference there I wonder…
Thanks Mags!
I didn’t think Darcy looked like any of the movie Darcys.
But the girls look very glamorous. Very much like comic-book chicks.
…Do any of you know if it will be available for individual purchase on the Marvel.com website? (I don’t want to have to “subscribe”) Or know of another website I can purchase this on?
I wouldn’t mine buying it; even if the characters look like “supermodels” or look-a-likes of the ’05 version =oP
Cute enough for me to go ahead and order, although I must say this (sorry, don’t know the markup for hotlinks on this site) http://tintinpantoja.com/PAGES/artpages/pride&prejudice.html is the one I have been eagerly looking forward to for a couple years now – in vain!
I’m trying to like it -the Marvel comic-.
I do believe the artist is very talented, still… there’s something missing or overdone or, maybe, Petrus is drawing and somebody else is colouring???… I don’t know!
I loved at once the version Karenlee linked. And I am not a fan of Manga -Hush! You didn’t hear that from me
-
Oh jeez, Nuria, “that” Darcy looks like Michael Jackson! I can imagine what kind of dance he would perform at the Netherfield Ball. Maybe while singing “Elizabeth’s … not my lover …” This will keep me smiling all day!
Oops, sorry. I meant to direct my comment to Karenlee’s link in #17.
One can definitely see the P&P3 influence in this comic book series. Even Longbourn looks like Groombridge Place.
Mrs. Bennet looks a little too close to Jack Nicholson as the Joker for comfort, and the Bennet girls are mighty glamorous indeed, but it is a comic book after all. I’m just happy their bosoms are in normal proportion to the rest of their bodies.
As you have all given your opinion, I must do as well as I can by myself; and I have now quite determined, and really almost made up my mind—that I am somewhat less than enthusiastic thus far. Now, if Mr. Darcy were secretly Wolverine, that would be something.
Darn, now I am sorry I pre-ordered it a few weeks ago. I thought the illustration would be more inspired and creative. I doesn’t seem to capture the spirit of the characters and somehow seems both predictable and slick. I very much like the P&P chapter by Tintin Pantoja and also hope he comes out with a complete version. Thanks for the link Karenlee!
I love these drawings, from Flickr. The author/illustrator hasn’t updated in a long time, however:

I am severely disappointed. It’s a shame that the author decided to base the illustrations on the recent P&P adaptation rather than imagination and thorough research of hairstyle and dress. It’s incredible how some scenes, dresses and hairdos look just like in the film. I thought it was supposed to be a book adaptation, but it looks like a movie adaptation to me and the movie that could have done with better knowledge of the book and the time at that. And here I was so looking forward to it…
I agree with ethelnorthbrook in re the illustrations. I hope that when we read the whole comic that the words will make up for the drawings. (BTW, Marvel has apparently for some time been doing these comics of the classics; when I went into the local comic store to pre-order, they were selling, I believe, the Odyssey and Kidnapped. Or something like that.)
I suppose it is racing early to judgment, but so far I prefer the NA manga.
Karenlee – I viewed the page you linked to and love the originality. I’m such a comic book novice – is that style considered Manga? I would buy it just because I seem to have a compulsion to buy JA in any form. Which is why I’ll buy the Marvel one, too.
Michelle – I also viewed the Flickr feed. That is much more true to the book, it seems, and the characters also appear to be inspired from imagination than movies.
All this makes me wish I could draw. I wonder if there’s been a stick figure P&P…
I hope it’s not all like the 2005 version. What a disappointment that would be. I’ve pre-ordered, so I hope they don’t let me down…Not that I was expecting a masterpiece, but still…
