More Emma 2009 casting news

April 7, 2009

Alert Janeites Anna and Maisy reported in comments, and Alert Janeites Laurel Ann and Lisa via e-mail, that the BBC has announced some more cast members for Emma 2009.

Jodhi May (Einstein And Eddington, Friends And Crocodiles) plays Miss Taylor, Emma’s former governess who marries the good-humoured Mr Weston played by Robert Bathurst (Cold Feet, White Teeth, My Dad’s The Prime Minister).

Tamsin Greig (The Diary Of Anne Frank, Green Wing) plays the incessantly chatty, well-meaning Miss Bates whose poverty draws the pity and goodwill of all of Highbury.

The Hornblower fans who read (and write on) this blog will no doubt be delighted to see more of poor Mr. Eccleston, who came to such a bad end. “The ship…is yours…Mr. Hornblower.” *sniff* (he lives on in fanfic, fear not)

In other Emma adaptation news, Alert Janeite Reeba also sent in an article with a tidbit about Ayesha, the modern-set Bollywood adaptation of Emma starring Sonam Kapoor. We now know which gentleman will play whom, and Reeba has kindly provided links so we can check them out: Mr Knightley will be played by Abhay Deol; Mr. Elton by Cyrus Sahukar; and Frank Churchill by Arunoday Singh.

Tamsin Greig! This is my favourite thing about Emma 2009 so far, and I am already hugely in favour of most of the casting.

I’ve been thinking of who they will cast for the other parts in E4. What about Hannah Hobley for Harriet Smith? She was Miss Pole’s maid in Cranford. Harriet is supposed to be plump and pretty. She would need to color her hair, though.

    Jodhi May! Jodhi May! YES!
I’m still (unreasonably, I know) disappointed by their choice for Knightly, but I’m more and more pleased with their casting evertime we hear something more about it.
(Yes! YES!! Hooray for Jodhi May! Hooray for Jodhi May and Micheal Gambon)

Whoa, that is weird. Last time I saw Romola Garai and Jodhi May in a film together, they were in a sort of love triangle with Daniel Deronda. Now May is her (ex)governess?? Actually, I’d like to see Jodhi May in Persuasion. She switches from plain to pretty to gorgeous in the most amazing way. I’d still say she looks too young yet, though! I’m basically saying this is crazy talk for her to play Miss Taylor. But I’m sure I will enjoy it.

I just read on C19 that Blake Ritson (another Edmund Bertram!) and Christina Cole will play the Eltons. Rupert Evans will play Frank Churchill, according to the source (not sure how reliable, but it might very well be true :) ).

Over on C19 they are posting that Blake Ritson will be Elton, Caroline Cole, Mrs. E and Rupert Evans, Frank. Didn’t see anything “official” though.

I am SOO excited that Tamsin Greig is in this film! I saw her in the RSC and she is most definitely the best comedic actress I’ve ever seen! She has an absolute talent for it. She will steal this film from all the rest.
