Midweek Open Thread: Pretty Music Edition

July 15, 2009

Well, we’ve all chewed over the Emma trailer pretty thoroughly by now, so it’s time to move on to other things. If you can’t get enough, the thread about the trailer at Oh No They Didn’t is a bit of fun.

Speaking of trailers, we heard from Philip Sheppard, the composer of the lovely, haunting piano piece that accompanied ITV’s trailer for the Jane Austen Season. He has posted a couple of new pieces of music on his blog that he wanted to share with AustenBlog readers. close your eyes is a piece for solo cello, prepared piano and strings. Not Coming Back is a piece for piano and cello orchestra. Enjoy!

This is an open thread, so let us know what’s going on in your part of Janeiteville.

Thanks for your support as ever…
I’ve been sending out lots of mp3s to JA fans as a result.
It has to be said, they’re my most polite listeners – they always write back!

Thanks! I am going to listen it right now! It’s a pleasure to enjoy Mr Sheppard’s music.

Finally got to read Reginald Hill’s The Price of Butcher’s Meat (British title:A Cure for All Diseases) that incorporates elements of Sanditon. I loved it! Dalzeil and Pascoe are old favorites of mine and Hill has such obvious affection for Austen and the Janeites. The technical elements of the novel are interesting, with e-mail exchanges, stream of consciousness from The Fat Man to his new iPod, and standard narrative form. Creepy Franny Roote shows up again too. Best of all, it’s funny. Not really much else to ask for in your mystery fiction, sez me.
