Region 2 Emma09 DVD to go on sale November 30
[/caption] Alert Janeite Ari sent in a link to the BBC Shop to preorder the DVD for Emma 2009, which will be released on November 30. It doesn’t say, but we’re assuming this is the Region 2 DVD. No doubt the Region 1 DVD will follow the Masterpiece Classic broadcast of the film in early 2010.
Also, BBC Books has announced a tie-in edition of the novel to be published on September 17, 2009. (Click on the thumbnail of the book cover to see a larger version.)
Emma remains one of Jane Austen’s most enduringly popular novels, with its feisty heroine whose determination to find love for those around her almost thwarts her own chance of finding happiness!
The much-loved Austen novel has been given a fresh look in this series adapted by award-winning writer Sandy Welch, who also provides the introduction for the new book. With well-known actors, Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller taking the title roles of Emma and Mr Knightley, this promises to be a very special and enduring adaptation.
No idea if it will be available outside the UK; we’ll try to find out.
And for those who missed it (in the Editrix’s book group
), here is the introductory clip from the series:
And here is the BBC press release about the cast. Just getting everyone caught up.

Have we got a BBC broadcast date for this yet?
I think it’s on October, but nothing official yet.
Finally managed to find a sideways reference to it on BBC One website – all it says is “this fall”.
Probably sometime between September 17 and November 30.
Assuming they show one episode per week, probably end of October/early November start, with the DVD release just afterwards. This is strictly speculation based upon the DVD release date, however. The Beeb probably doesn’t even really know yet.
The preview clip is not encouraging. Emma declaring her love in a tearful outburst to Mr. Knightley? Pul-eeease!
Hey Marsha!
We discussed the clip pretty thoroughly at the time, and the consensus was “meh.” I think that scene is just Emma explaining that she can’t leave Hartfield and her father, but still a bit much.
Thanks for the scoop ! Agree they may’ve laid it on abit thick, but the teary scene maybe lighter viewed in context with the episode; hoping.
I’m looking forward to Emma 4 and will pre-order this CD. I’m glad there’s an extra with Sandy Welch. I rquire so much. I want an Emma4 CD poster too !
Hey, what’s with that bonnet in the photo? Emma looks like Scarlet O’Hara!
