The AGM wasn’t the only Jane Austen-inspired meeting last weekend; Janeites in Cleveland met to learn about fashion and dancing, and the Plain Dealer has a report.
The costumes were modeled after Greek and Roman statuaries, a style ushered in by Marie Antoinette, said Kent State University Museum curator Anne Bissonnette. That meant thin, white muslin dresses; whale-bone stays that kept shoulders back; and satin heels that wore out after one ball.
“Skin is in, for women, for men,” Bissonnette said, showing portraits and photographs of period clothing. “It’s a negligee approach to fashion.”
Sounds like a fun event!
