The latest edition of the Carnival of Personal Finance at the Pecuniaries blog has a Jane Austen theme. Many readers would consider such a theme to be spot-on. As no less a Janeite than W.H. Auden wrote,
It makes me most uncomfortable to see
An English spinster of the middle-class
Describe the amorous effects of ‘brass’,
Reveal so frankly and with such sobriety
The economic basis of society.
The collection of articles is exhaustive (and we dare say timely). We feared at first there would be a great deal of strained metaphors to Jane Austen’s work (“Darcy saves on laundry by washing his shirt in the lake!”) but the theme is shown through screen captures from the films with quotations from the novels. It’s an awfully pretty way to get a dose of financial reality.
