Welcome to Getting Local With Jane, our weekly feature in which we list upcoming events of interest to Janeites. Even if one of these events is not in your neighborhood, stay tuned–you never know when Jane will come to your hometown! (She’s everywhere, you know.)

March 27-28, 2009, Boston, Lincolnshire: Heartbreak Productions’ touring production of Emma comes to Blackfriars Theatre and Arts Centre. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are £12, £10 concessions; call the box office (see link) for details.

March 27-29, 2009, West Liberty, Iowa: West Liberty High School presents the Jon Jory adaptation of Pride and Prejudice Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $6 for students.

March 29, 2009, Tucson, Arizona: The University of Arizona presents the Joffrey Ballet at 7 p.m. at Centennial Hall. What does that have to do with Jane Austen, you ask?

“Age of Innocence” was created by choreographer Edwaard Liang after he read a collection of books written by Jane Austen. In the dance, he is expressing the mental process of the female in the time setting of Austen’s novels. He is trying to depict the complexities of the traditions of courting: the ballroom dancing, the limited time alone with a potential partner and the helplessness and aloneness in the situation.

March 30, 2009, Albany, Oregon: “A Jane Austen Afternoon” starts with a special showing of Sense and Sensibility 1995 at 11 a.m. at the Pix Theatre, followed by afternoon tea at the Cascade Grill Restaurant from 2 to 4 p.m. The movie is $10, and tea is $15. Tea tickets must be purchased online at http://www.elysian-designs.com/ (save $2 when purchasing tickets to both events). “Regency period costumes are encouraged, but not required.”

May 15-17, 2009, Port Jefferson, New York: JASNA’s Greater New York Region will sponsor a weekend event, “Travel & Transportation in the Time of Jane Austen.” Speakers include Sandy Lerner, founder of Chawton House Library and an expert on Regency era horse-drawn vehicles, Professor Janine Barchas of the University of Texas, and Professor Michael Simon of SUNY Stony Brook. Other activities include a welcome tea and cookies, an original stage production by Lynn Marie Macy, a dinner cruise on Long Island Sound, and a visit to The Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages. July 19-24, 2009, Lexington, Virginia: Washington and Lee University’s Alumni College presents “The World of Jane Austen: A Truth Universally Acknowledged ~ And Stuff (Best. Title. Ever.), a one-week program in which participants will study Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice as well as the world of Jane Austen’s novels in historical and cultural context. Instructors will be Marc Conner and Theresa Braunschneider from the English department, Pam Simpson from art history, and Taylor Sanders from history.

Autumn 2009, Austin, Texas: The University of Texas at Austin (not Austen!) presents Pride and Prejudice. Details to come, we would imagine.
