Emma 2009 Broadcast (UK) Confirmed for October 4

Alert Janeite Cinthia wrote to tell us that the BBC has posted its upcoming television schedule, which includes air dates for the first two (of four) episodes of Emma 09. The first episode will be broadcast on Sunday, October 4, from 9-10 p.m. The second episode will be broadcast at the same time the following Sunday, so we can probably assume the other two episodes will follow the same pattern.

Cinthia also found a not very informative press pack on the BBC site. (Though as Alert Janeite Sylvia pointed out, we will get to see Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Churchill!)

Sylvia also let us know that the site Shootastic has high-res promo photos from the production, but you have to register to see them. (We have not registered, but if you would like to see them, go for it!)

    Some Janeites in England have said that a new trailer for E4 (different from the one that we’ve seen here) was shown on television last week. If anyone has any hints of where we might see this please let us know.

    However, once again and I hope everyone can forgive my repetead plea, do not post any direct links either to the trailer or the miniseries itself. With allusions or hints would be enough, as I really think we do not want to see those possible clips disappear from those alternate channels as it has happened in other occasions.

  7. I am really waiting to see the 1st episode to catch the ‘spirit’ of this adaptation. Anyway, I fear it already :(.

    @Sylvia M: I just got really confused by referring to this version of Emma as E4 as E4 is a rival television channel in the UK. 🙂

    I saw Romola on BBC Breakfast yesterday as well as two clips. The first of Emma and Harriet painting with Mr Elton in the background and the second of Emma and Mr Knightley arguing. It look terrible, esp. the second clip. I am hoping it won’t be awful because, obviously, I’ll be watching but, like you @Carmen, I fear it already.

      I’ve always thought the 1-2-3-4 movie numbering system was confusing. P&P0? What? And what if they release the 1967 BBC version? Will it be P&P0.5?

      I usually use the year system, which has its drawbacks as well, for instance when TV adaptations are released one year in the UK and another in the US, or with the two Emmas both released in 1997. No system is perfect, I guess, but at least newbies don’t need a translation. We’ve had examples on this blog of people thinking P&P1 was the 1940 version, etc.

        I agree with Mags. To avoid the problem with different release years, I go by the year as listed on IMDb (e.g. P&P-80). For the Beckinsale Emma, I use E96-tv.

        I’ve had no problem with the Austen-L numbering system, I learned it since my earlier days in the internet Austen communities, and in fact I think it is a good exercise for memory, even with the P&P0 and S&S0 additions. BTW, has anyone received his/her S&S0 (1971 in order some understand) region-1 DVD? It was released last Tuesday.

        But that’s the problem–you have to learn it. Visitors who just pop into the blog because they saw something on TV and googled it don’t have that frame of reference, and it is confusing. Online communications are difficult enough without adding to the barriers.

        I also don’t like referring to the movies by actors’ names (i.e., Keira Knightley P&P, Colin Firth P&P) because they are JANE AUSTEN’S stories. But that’s a personal issue and I recognize that it is perhaps not completely reasonable. 🙂

        How different perspectives! I understand that for the average people, it would be difficult to understand and they do not need to learnt it. But for me, as I was certain I was a Janeite even then, I knew I have to learnt it, and I do not mind learning something I am to use, in part that is why I find it an exercise for memory, since nowadays there are few things that people are really willing to learn by heart. I also understand they might be barriers, but I see it as a kind of “secret code” among us Janeites :). So it really seems that it is a matter of tastes.

        I wasn’t trying to cause problems with the numbering system. I have done it the other way, but then you also have another problem. We have Sense and Sensibility with Hattie Morahan, Charity Wakefield, etc. Do you call it S&S07 or S&S08? In England it came out in 2007. In America, 2008. I tend to call it by the England date, even though I’m American, because that’s when it first came out. What about the two Emmas in the mid-nineties? What years did they come out? I always thought it was Paltrow 1996 and Beckinsale 1997. Is that correct or not?

        I always lose track of the numbers whether they are years or versions, so I end up referring to the Davies’P&P or the Beckinsale Emma even though it is not authentically “Janeite”–except for the Keira Knightly P&P, I just refer to that as The Crappy One 😉

        I use the year in my thesis and I get the year from when it was first shown in Britain because it’s just easier for me. In the case of the Emma’s I add (Film) or (TV) after the year. It’s still very confusing but I would argue it’s more accessable.

    As I had guessed, it will include the ball at The Crown, what I have not suspected is that apparently the Box Hill excursion is also there. However, there is no mention of the visit to Donwell Abbey, so maybe it will not be included (no strawberries monologue by Mrs. Elton?).

    A few more details, apparently the official BBC site is up also (but notice the URL, it has no really “emma” and “drama” key words to identify it):

    It also says it includes the advance clip for Episode 1 (I guess the one that people in UK has already reported having seen it in TV) and Behind The Scenes one, but also as it has become customary of BBC, they are only viewable for those in UK, nothing for those outside.
