We swoon over the new Penguin Classics edition of Emma edited by Juliette Wells, with a beautiful cover design by Dadu Shin. We noticed how many pretty editions of Emma were out there when we were writing JAC2C, and decided to put together a gallery of some of our favorites.

I recently received a copy of the new 200th Anniversary Penguin Classics edition of Emma, and thought, “Why didn’t they send this to me two years ago!” Because two years ago, I was in the initial stages of putting together Jane Austen Cover to Cover, and I certainly would have loved to include this beautiful cover design by Dadu Shin.

I am anxious to read Julliette’s annotations and the extra material on Emma and it’s publication. I found her talk at the JASNA Eatsern PA regional meeting fascinating and entertaining.

I enjoyed Juliette’s talk as well, Joan. Obviously the older editions are an interest of mine! Now I’m really looking forward to her presentation at the AGM next year.

The embroidered Emma cover is one of my very favorites! I am a needleworker also and I love the way they raised the “stitches” on the cover. This makes it a lovely tactile experience as well as a visual one.

I’m so pleased to hear this. I’m beginning my “Emma” reading marathon in honor of the 200th Anniversary. (I found myself re-reading “Mansfield Park” fifteen times to celebrate.) I went into “MP” with “MP” in last place, but eventually worried it could nudge out of the Top Spot my all-time-favorite JA novel: “Emma.” Juliette Wells’s edition could help me uncover all the depth that made “MP” so compelling (okay, addictive).

When my husband and I were first married and living in the D.C. area, he arranged for us to go to Goucher and view their collection of early JA editions as a birthday present. Best present ever! And everyone at Goucher was great. This edition sounds like a good one!
